Cell shape depends on the cell wall, the cytoskeleton, the cell's specialised function, and pressure from neighbouring structures.

Several factors together determine the characteristic shape of a cell:

  1. Cell wall — in plant cells and many microbes, the rigid cell wall outside the plasma membrane fixes the cell into a definite, often polygonal, shape. Animal cells, lacking a wall, tend to be more variable/rounded or can actively change shape (e.g. amoeboid WBCs).
