Inflorescence is the arrangement of flowers on the floral axis; in a racemose inflorescence the main axis grows indefinitely and bears flowers laterally in acropetal succession (oldest at base, youngest at apex) with no terminal flower.

Definition. An inflorescence is the specific arrangement or grouping of flowers on the floral axis (the peduncle) of a plant. The way flowers are borne on this axis is an important feature used in describing and classifying flowering plants.

Racemose inflorescence. In the racemose (indefinite) type:

  • The main axis has unlimited/indefinite growth - it does not end in a flower but keeps elongating at the tip.
  • Flowers are borne laterally on the main axis.
  • The arrangement is in acropetal succession: the older, mature flowers are at the base and the younger buds are towards the apex (the tip). So flowers open from below upwards.
  • When the axis is flattened, the arrangement is centripetal (older flowers outside, younger towards the centre).

Main sub-types of racemose inflorescence:

  1. Raceme - unbranched elongated axis bearing stalked (pedicellate) flowers, e.g. Mustard, Radish.
  2. Spike - elongated axis with sessile (stalkless) flowers, e.g. Achyranthes.
  3. Catkin - a pendulous spike with unisexual flowers, e.g. Mulberry.
  4. Spadix - a fleshy spike enclosed by a large bract called a spathe, e.g. Colocasia, Maize.
  5. Corymb - axis short, lower flowers have longer pedicels so all flowers come to the same level, e.g. Candytuft. …
