Family Liliaceae (the lily family) is a monocot family of mostly bulbous herbs with parallel venation and trimerous, petaloid flowers; its floral formula is Actinomorphic, Bisexual, P(3+3) A3+3 G(3).

Diagnostic (vegetative) characters

  • Habit: mostly perennial herbs arising from an underground bulb, rhizome or corm; a few are climbers (e.g., Asparagus, Gloriosa) or shrubby/arborescent (e.g., Aloe, Yucca).
  • Root: adventitious, fibrous, arising from the underground stem.
  • Stem: underground modified stem (bulb/rhizome/corm) giving rise to an aerial, unbranched, usually herbaceous shoot.
  • Leaves: alternate or radical, simple, sessile or with a sheathing base, exstipulate, with parallel venation (occasionally reticulate, e.g., Smilax).

Floral characters

  • Inflorescence: solitary or a raceme/cyme/umbel.
  • Flower: bisexual, actinomorphic (regular), trimerous, hypogynous.
  • Perianth: 6 tepals in two whorls of 3 each, often petaloid (brightly coloured), free or united, valvate or imbricate aestivation.
  • Androecium: 6 stamens in two whorls of 3, epiphyllous (attached to the tepals), anthers dithecous, dehiscing lengthwise.
  • Gynoecium: tricarpellary, syncarpous, ovary superior, trilocular with many ovules on axile placentation; style single, stigma trifid.
  • Fruit: capsule (loculicidal) or berry.
  • Seed: endospermic.

Floral formula

Actinomorphic, Bisexual, P(3+3) A3+3 G(3)

(P(3+3) = 6 tepals in two fused/free whorls of 3; A3+3 = 6 stamens in two whorls of 3; G(3) = syncarpous ovary of 3 fused carpels, superior)
