Root hairs originate in the region (zone) of maturation, not in the meristematic or elongation zones.

Moving from the tip of a root inward, four regions can be recognised:

  1. Root cap — a thimble-like structure protecting the tender apex as the root pushes through soil.
  2. Region of meristematic activity — cells here are small, thin-walled, with dense protoplasm, and divide repeatedly.
  3. Region of elongation — cells just above the meristematic zone undergo rapid elongation and enlargement, responsible for the root increasing in length.
  4. Region of maturation — further above the elongation zone, cells attain their maximum length and begin to differentiate/mature. In this zone, many epidermal cells develop very fine, delicate, thread-like extensions called root hairs, which absorb water and minerals from the soil. …
