Various plant growth promoters:
- Auxins — e.g. IAA (indole-3-acetic acid), NAA, 2,4-D.
- Gibberellins — e.g. GA3 (gibberellic acid), a large group of over 100 related compounds.
- Cytokinins — e.g. kinetin, zeatin.
(Note: Ethylene is sometimes treated separately as it can both promote and inhibit growth depending on the tissue and concentration; abscisic acid, in contrast, is a growth inhibitor, not a promoter.)
Uses of Auxin (taking auxin as the example growth promoter):
- Rooting: Auxins are widely used in nurseries and horticulture to induce adventitious root formation in stem cuttings, making vegetative propagation of plants easier.
- Parthenocarpy: Auxin application can induce the development of seedless fruits (parthenocarpic fruit) e.g. in tomatoes.
- Preventing fruit/leaf drop: Auxin sprays are used to prevent premature fruit and leaf abscission (fall) in orchards, reducing pre-harvest fruit drop. …
