Gymnosperms are heterosporous, seed-bearing plants whose defining feature is 'naked' seeds — ovules that are not enclosed in an ovary — combined with a perennial woody habit and wind pollination.

Important characteristics of gymnosperms:

  • Naked ovules/seeds: The ovules are not enclosed by any ovary wall (there is no true fruit); after fertilisation the seeds remain exposed, often on the surface of sporophylls that are aggregated into cones (strobili). This is the single most important diagnostic feature (the name 'gymnosperm' literally means 'naked seed').
  • Heterospory: Gymnosperms produce two kinds of spores — microspores (which develop into the male gametophyte/pollen grain) and megaspores (which develop into the female gametophyte) — on the same or different plants.
  • Reduced, dependent gametophytes: Unlike lower plants, the male and female gametophytes in gymnosperms do not have an independent free-living existence; they develop and remain within the sporangia borne on the sporophyte itself.
  • Pollination: Almost always anemophilous (wind-pollinated), since there are no petals or nectar to attract animal pollinators.
  • Habit: Perennial, woody, mostly evergreen; usually trees or shrubs (rarely herbaceous).
  • Root system: Well-developed tap root; some genera show special symbiotic roots — e.g., coralloid roots harbouring nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria in Cycas, and mycorrhizal roots in Pinus. …
