Cutaneous respiration is the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide directly through a frog's moist, thin, blood-vessel-rich skin, and it is especially important when the frog is submerged or dormant.

Mechanism: A frog's skin is thin, kept constantly moist and slippery by mucus secreted from numerous mucous glands, and is supplied with a dense network of blood capillaries lying just beneath its surface. Because the skin is thin and moist, dissolved oxygen from the surrounding water or humid air can diffuse directly across it into the blood, while carbon dioxide diffuses out in the opposite direction — this gas exchange through the skin is called cutaneous respiration.

Significance:

  • It is the chief mode of respiration while the frog is submerged in water, since lungs cannot be used underwater.
  • During hibernation (in winter, buried in mud) and aestivation (in extreme summer), when the frog is largely inactive and lung ventilation is minimal, cutaneous respiration (along with some buccal respiration) supplies almost all of its oxygen needs. …
