Hybridisation blends atomic orbitals into new equivalent hybrid orbitals; sp2 hybridisation (1 s + 2 p) gives three orbitals at 120 degree, e.g. in BF3 or in each carbon of ethylene.

Hybridisation is the process of intermixing atomic orbitals of an atom that have slightly different energies (e.g. s and p orbitals of the same shell), so as to redistribute their energies and give rise to a new set of orbitals of equivalent energy and shape, called hybrid orbitals. The number of hybrid orbitals formed equals the number of atomic orbitals that mix, and hybrid orbitals form stronger, more directional bonds than the original unhybridised orbitals.

In sp2 hybridisation, one s orbital and two p orbitals of the central atom mix together to form three equivalent sp2 hybrid orbitals. These three orbitals arrange themselves as far apart as possible in space, giving a trigonal planar geometry with bond angles of about 120 degree.
