Electron gain enthalpy is the energy change on adding an electron to a gaseous atom; it becomes more negative across a period and less negative down a group (with exceptions).

Electron gain enthalpy (Delta_egH) is defined as the enthalpy change accompanying the addition of one mole of electrons to one mole of isolated gaseous atoms in their ground state: X(g) + e- -> X-(g). A more negative value means more energy is released, i.e., the atom has a greater tendency to accept an electron.

Trend across a period (left to right): Electron gain enthalpy generally becomes more negative because nuclear charge increases while atomic size decreases, so the added electron is pulled in more strongly and more energy is released. Halogens (Group 17) have the most negative electron gain enthalpies in their periods, since they need only one more electron to attain a stable noble-gas configuration.
