Representative elements are the s-block and p-block elements, where the last electron fills the outermost s or p sub-shell.

Elements are classified into blocks based on which sub-shell receives the last (differentiating) electron:

  • s-block (Groups 1 and 2): outer configuration ns^1 or ns^2.
  • p-block (Groups 13-18): outer configuration ns^2 np^1 to ns^2 np^6.

Together, the s-block and p-block elements are called representative elements (or main-group elements), because their properties vary in a regular, representative way across a period and down a group, and their valence electrons are entirely in the outermost shell.
