Because the C-C single bond in ethane (CH3-CH3) allows free rotation, the two -CH3 groups can rotate relative to each other, giving rise to an infinite number of conformations, of which two are the extreme (and most important) forms:
-
Eclipsed conformation: the C-H bonds on the front carbon are directly aligned with (eclipse) the C-H bonds on the back carbon when viewed along the C-C axis (dihedral/torsional angle = 0 degrees between corresponding bonds).
-
Staggered conformation: the C-H bonds on the front carbon are positioned exactly between the C-H bonds on the back carbon when viewed along the C-C axis (dihedral angle = 60 degrees between corresponding bonds) -- the bonds are maximally separated from each other.
