(a) Functional group: An atom or a group of atoms present within an organic molecule that is chiefly responsible for its characteristic chemical behaviour/reactions, regardless of the rest of the molecule's structure.
- Functional group of alcohols: -OH (the hydroxyl group), e.g. in CH3-OH (methanol), C2H5-OH (ethanol).
- Functional group of carboxylic acids: -COOH (the carboxyl group), e.g. in CH3COOH (acetic acid).
(b) Homologous series: A series of organic compounds, all containing the same functional group, in which each successive member differs from the one before it by a constant unit, -CH2- (methylene, an increment of 14 atomic mass units).
Characteristics of a homologous series:
- All members can be represented by the same general molecular formula (e.g. CnH2n+2 for alkanes, CnH2n+1OH for alcohols).
- Successive members differ from each other by a -CH2- unit (mass difference of 14 u).
- All members possess similar chemical properties because they share the same functional group, but their physical properties (melting point, boiling point, density, solubility) change gradually and regularly with increasing molecular mass. …
