A state function's value depends only on the current state of the system, not on how it got there; internal energy qualifies because delta U between two given states is always the same regardless of path, even though the heat and work exchanged along the way (individually) can differ.

State function: A thermodynamic property whose value depends ONLY on the initial and final states of a system, and not on the path or process by which the change occurred. Examples include internal energy (U), enthalpy (H), entropy (S), and the state variables pressure, volume and temperature. In contrast, quantities like heat (q) and work (w) are path functions -- their individual values DO depend on the path taken.

Internal energy as a state function:

Internal energy U is the total energy contained within a system (sum of kinetic and potential energies of all its constituent particles) at a given state. Since U is completely determined by the system's state variables (temperature, pressure, volume, amount and nature of substance), any two systems in the identical state have the identical internal energy, no matter how they arrived at that state.

Consequently, if a system goes from an initial state A to a final state B, the change in internal energy:

delta U = U(final) - U(initial)

is always the same value, whether the process is carried out directly in one step or via any number of intermediate steps (e.g. by different combinations of heating, compressing, expanding).
