Negative total energy of a system (like an orbiting satellite or a planet bound to the sun) signifies that the system is gravitationally bound — the body cannot escape to infinity without additional energy input.

For a body of mass m orbiting (or bound to) a mass M, the total mechanical energy is:

E = KE + PE = (1/2) m v^2 - (G M m)/r

For a circular orbit, this works out to E = -(GMm)/(2r), which is negative.

Physical significance of negative total energy:

  • A negative total energy means the kinetic energy of the body is less in magnitude than the (negative) gravitational potential energy binding it to the central mass.
