Impulse is force acting over a short time; momentum is mass times velocity; the impulse-momentum theorem says the impulse delivered to a body equals its change in momentum.

Momentum:

The momentum p of a body of mass m moving with velocity v is defined as:

p = m v

It is a vector quantity with SI unit kg m/s.

Impulse:

When a large force acts on a body for a very short interval of time (e.g. during a collision or a hit), the effect is measured by impulse J, defined as the product of the average force and the time for which it acts (or, more generally, the time integral of the force):

J = F(avg) * delta(t) = Integral of F dt

Impulse is also a vector quantity, with the same SI unit as momentum: kg m/s (or equivalently N s, since N = kg m/s^2, so N s = kg m/s).

Relation between them (Impulse-Momentum theorem):

From Newton's second law, F = dp/dt, so: …
