Surface energy is the extra energy possessed by the molecules of a liquid surface (compared to interior molecules); numerically, surface energy per unit area equals the surface tension.

Definition: Molecules at the free surface of a liquid have higher potential energy than molecules in the bulk, because surface molecules have fewer neighbours pulling them inward, so extra work must be done against the inward cohesive force to bring a molecule from the interior to the surface. This extra potential energy possessed by the surface layer, per unit area, is called the surface energy.

Relation to surface tension: To increase the surface area of a liquid film by a small amount delta A, work must be done against the surface tension force, given by:

W = T x (delta A)
