In one dimensional motion, a particle moves along a single straight line, and only one coordinate is needed to fix its position at any time. In two dimensional motion, the particle moves in a plane (a flat 2-D surface), and TWO coordinates — usually x and y, or equivalently a position vector r = x i + y j — are needed to specify its location at any instant.
In two dimensional motion, the velocity and acceleration of the particle need not point along the same line; the direction of motion can change continuously. Classic examples are:
