Angular momentum of a particle about a point is the cross product of its position vector and linear momentum, L = r x p; its SI unit is kg m^2 s^-1 and its dimensional formula is [M L^2 T^-1].

Definition: The angular momentum of a particle about a given point (origin) is defined as the moment of its linear momentum about that point:

L = r x p

where r is the position vector of the particle from the chosen point, and p = mv is its linear momentum. Its magnitude is L = r p sin(theta) = m v r sin(theta), where theta is the angle between r and p. For a rigid body rotating about a fixed axis with angular velocity omega and moment of inertia I about that axis, this reduces to the simpler scalar relation L = I omega.
