Principle of calorimetry: in an isolated system, heat lost by the hot body = heat gained by the cold body (conservation of heat energy).

When a hot body and a cold body are brought into contact (e.g. mixed inside a calorimeter, which is designed to prevent heat loss to the surroundings), heat flows spontaneously from the hotter body to the colder body until they reach a common (equilibrium) temperature. Since energy can neither be created nor destroyed, and the system is thermally isolated from the outside, all the heat lost by the hot body is gained by the cold body:

Heat lost by hot body = Heat gained by cold body

m1 * s1 * (T1 - T_mix) = m2 * s2 * (T_mix - T2)
