A coherent system of units is one in which the units for all physical quantities are derived from a small set of base units using only the numerical factor 1 -- i.e. no extra conversion constants are needed when combining units (e.g. unit of force = unit of mass x unit of acceleration, exactly, with no numeric factor). The system adopted worldwide for this purpose is the SI (International System of Units), built on seven base units: metre (length), kilogram (mass), second (time), ampere (electric current), kelvin (temperature), mole (amount of substance), and candela (luminous intensity). Every other (derived) unit -- newton, joule, watt, pascal, and so on -- is built coherently from these seven.
