Elastic collision:
- Total linear momentum of the colliding bodies is conserved.
- Total kinetic energy of the system is ALSO conserved -- the kinetic energy before collision exactly equals the kinetic energy after collision.
- The bodies separate after collision (they do not stick together); no permanent deformation or heat/sound is generated.
- Example: collisions between ideal gas molecules, collisions between hard steel/glass balls (approximately elastic).
Inelastic collision:
- Total linear momentum of the system is still conserved (this holds for ANY collision, as long as no external force acts).
- Total kinetic energy is NOT conserved -- some kinetic energy is converted into other forms of energy, such as heat, sound, and energy of permanent deformation of the colliding bodies. …
