The work done in lifting a mass against gravity equals mgh; here the total mass of all 10 bricks is used.

Given:

Number of bricks = 10, each of mass 1 kg → total mass carried, m = 10 x 1 = 10 kg

Height of the house, h = 5 m

Acceleration due to gravity, g = 9.8 m/s^2

When the labourer carries the bricks up the ladder to the roof at (essentially) constant speed, the work he does against gravity equals the increase in gravitational potential energy of the bricks:

W = mgh

Substituting the values:

W = 10 x 9.8 x 5

W = 490 J
