Management qualifies as a science because it possesses a systematic body of

knowledge and principles developed through observation and experience, but since it

deals with human behaviour, its principles are not as exact or universally applicable

as the principles of physical sciences — it is best described as an inexact or social

science.

Management as a Science — the Criteria

A science is a systematised body of knowledge pertaining to a specific field of

study; it contains general truths/principles explaining a phenomenon, and these

principles are developed through repeated observation and experimentation.

Checking management against these criteria:

  • Systematised body of knowledge — management has its own theories and principles built up over years of research (e.g. Taylor's scientific management, Fayol's 14 principles of management), taught as a formal discipline in universities.
  • Principles based on experimentation and observation — management principles such as division of work, unity of command, and span of control have evolved through repeated observation and experimentation in real organisations, not mere opinion.
  • Universal validity — this is where management departs from an exact science. Principles of management are guidelines to action, but since they deal with human behaviour, they cannot be applied rigidly in all situations and have to be modified according to circumstances, unlike principles of pure science (e.g. the laws of gravitation) that hold true in all situations without variation.
