In the short run, as a firm increases output by adding more of the variable factor to a fixed factor, the law of variable proportions operates: marginal product initially rises (increasing returns), reaches a maximum, and then falls (diminishing returns). Since Marginal Cost is inversely related to Marginal Product (MC = Price of variable input ÷ Marginal Product of variable input, roughly), MC initially falls as marginal product rises, reaches a minimum when marginal product is at its maximum, and then rises as marginal product starts falling (diminishing returns).
