Main question — Relationship between Total Utility (TU) and Marginal Utility (MU):

Marginal Utility is the addition to Total Utility from consuming one more unit of a commodity (MUn = TUn − TUn-1). Their relationship:

  1. As long as MU is positive (though diminishing, by the Law of Diminishing Marginal Utility), TU continues to increase, but at a decreasing rate.
  2. TU reaches its maximum at the point where MU becomes zero (point of satiety) — this is the point of maximum satisfaction.
  3. If consumption is pushed further and MU becomes negative, TU starts to fall. So graphically, TU is an inverted-U shaped curve, while MU is a downward-sloping curve that cuts the X-axis exactly where TU is at its peak.
