Genetic drift is evolution by chance rather than by natural selection — random sampling of alleles from one generation to the next changes allele frequencies, and in small isolated populations this can lead to a new species forming (founder effect).

What is genetic drift?

Genetic drift is the random fluctuation in the frequency of alleles in a population from one generation to the next, caused purely by chance events (random sampling of gametes) rather than by natural selection. Its effect is much stronger in small populations, where chance events can more easily change which alleles are passed on, sometimes leading to the complete loss of one allele and the fixation (100% frequency) of another, purely by chance.

Role in evolution:

  • Genetic drift causes a population's gene pool to change randomly, independent of whether the alleles are advantageous, neutral, or harmful — this is different from natural selection, which is directional and driven by fitness. …
