Reproductive health means total physical, mental and social well-being in all reproduction-related matters; OR — the zygote develops through repeated cleavage into a blastocyst that implants in the uterine endometrium about a week after fertilisation.

Part 1 — What is Reproductive Health?

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Reproductive Health means total well-being in all aspects of reproduction — physical, emotional, behavioural and social — and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity of the reproductive system. A reproductively healthy society is one where people have functionally normal reproductive organs, normal emotional and behavioural interactions among individuals in matters related to sex, and are free from sexually transmitted diseases.

Significance of Reproductive Health in Society:

  1. Creates awareness among people about reproductive anatomy, physiology, adolescence and safe practices.
  2. Provides medical assistance for pregnancy, delivery, STDs, abortion, contraception and infertility.
  3. Helps control population explosion through knowledge of contraceptive methods.
  4. Reduces maternal and infant mortality through proper antenatal/postnatal care.
  5. Prevents female foeticide and improves the sex ratio through legal and social awareness (e.g., the PNDT Act).
  6. Lowers the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases through sex education.
  7. Helps society handle issues like teenage pregnancy and reproduction-related myths responsibly.

OR — Sequence of events from Zygote to Implantation:

  1. Fertilisation occurs in the ampullary-isthmic junction of the fallopian tube, producing a diploid zygote.
  2. The zygote undergoes repeated mitotic cleavage divisions while moving down the fallopian tube towards the uterus, passing through 2-, 4-, 8- and 16-celled stages. …
