Flowering plants use several outbreeding devices — dicliny, dichogamy, herkogamy, heterostyly, and self-incompatibility — to prevent self-pollination/self-fertilization and promote cross-pollination, thereby maintaining genetic variability.

Continued self-pollination in flowering plants leads to inbreeding depression, so many angiosperms have evolved devices to discourage self-pollination and encourage cross-pollination (xenogamy). Some common outbreeding devices are:

  1. Dicliny (unisexuality) — plants bear only male or only female flowers, preventing autogamy; if male and female flowers are on the same plant (monoecious, e.g. maize), only geitonogamy is prevented; if on different plants (dioecious, e.g. papaya), both autogamy and geitonogamy are prevented.
  2. Dichogamy — anthers and stigma of a bisexual flower mature at different times, so self-pollen cannot fertilise the same flower's stigma: protandry (anther matures before stigma) or protogyny (stigma matures before anther).
  3. Herkogamy — the anthers and stigma are physically arranged (positioned) so that self-pollen cannot easily contact the stigma.
  4. Heterostyly — flowers of the same species have styles and stamens of different, non-matching lengths, hindering self-pollination.
  5. Self-incompatibility — a genetic mechanism in which pollen grains, even if they land on the stigma of the same flower or a genetically identical flower, fail to germinate, or the pollen tube fails to grow down to fertilise the ovule; it is a physiological (genetically-controlled recognition) mechanism rather than a purely structural one, and prevents both autogamy and geitonogamy. …
