Rate = speed of concentration change with time; rate constant = the fixed proportionality factor in the rate law, characteristic of the reaction at a given temperature.

Rate of reaction: the change in concentration of any one reactant or product per unit time. For a reaction R→PR \rightarrow P:

Rate=−d[R]dt=d[P]dt\text{Rate} = -\dfrac{d[R]}{dt} = \dfrac{d[P]}{dt}

It is always expressed as a positive quantity, with units of concentration/time (e.g. mol L−1s−1mol\ L^{-1}s^{-1}).
