Self-inductance produces a back-emf that always opposes a change in current, exactly mirroring how inertia in mechanics opposes a change in velocity — this analogy is why self-induction is nicknamed electrical inertia.

In mechanics, inertia is the tendency of a body to resist any change in its state of rest or motion (Newton's first law) — a larger mass needs a larger force to produce the same change in velocity.

In a circuit possessing self-inductance L, whenever the current I tries to change, a changing magnetic flux is set up through the circuit's own coil, and by Faraday's/Lenz's law this induces a self-emf:

ε = −L (dI/dt)
