The three classes of magnetic materials are distinguished by how strongly (and in which direction) they respond to an external magnetic field, which traces back to whether their atoms have a net magnetic dipole moment and how those moments interact.

Diamagnetic substances (e.g. bismuth, copper, water):

  1. Weakly repelled by an external magnetic field (tend to move from stronger to weaker field regions).
  2. Magnetic susceptibility is small and negative.
  3. Their atoms/molecules have no net magnetic dipole moment; the field is induced only by the motion of orbiting electrons opposing the applied field (Lenz's-law-like effect), and this property is essentially independent of temperature.

Paramagnetic substances (e.g. aluminium, sodium, platinum):

  1. Weakly attracted by an external magnetic field.
  2. Magnetic susceptibility is small and positive.
  3. Their atoms do have a net magnetic dipole moment, but these are randomly oriented without a field; an external field partially aligns them, and susceptibility decreases with rising temperature (Curie's law), since thermal agitation disrupts the alignment.

Ferromagnetic substances (e.g. iron, cobalt, nickel):

  1. Strongly attracted by an external magnetic field. …
