Iodine is an essential component of thyroid hormones (T3/T4); its dietary deficiency leads to under-production of thyroxine and compensatory enlargement of the thyroid gland, a condition called goitre.

The thyroid gland synthesises thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) using iodine as an essential raw material. When dietary iodine is insufficient, the gland cannot make adequate thyroid hormone; low circulating hormone levels remove the negative feedback on the pituitary, which then secretes more TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) to try to compensate.
