Haemoglobin, packed in red blood cells, is the respiratory pigment responsible for carrying most of the oxygen (and some CO2) transported in human blood.

Haemoglobin is a globular, iron-containing protein pigment found within red blood cells; each haemoglobin molecule has four haem groups, each capable of reversibly binding one O2 molecule at the lungs (forming oxyhaemoglobin) and releasing it at oxygen-poor tissues. This makes haemoglobin responsible for transporting about 97% of the oxygen carried in blood (only a small fraction dissolves directly in plasma), and it also assists in carrying a portion of CO2 back to the lungs (as carbaminohaemoglobin) and buffers blood pH. …
