The standard enthalpy of formation of any element in its standard state is defined as zero.

Standard enthalpy of formation (delta-fH-degree) is defined as the enthalpy change when 1 mole of a compound is formed from its constituent elements, each in their standard (most stable) states, under standard conditions. Since an element in its own standard state is already the reference point - it doesn't need to be 'formed' from anything else - its enthalpy of formation relative to itself is, by definition and convention, taken as zero.
