Hydraulic stress is defined as the restoring force per unit area when a body is squeezed uniformly by a fluid, and by definition its magnitude equals the fluid (hydraulic) pressure applied.

When a solid body is submerged in a fluid and subjected to pressure from all sides (as in hydraulic compression, producing a change in volume -- bulk strain), the internal restoring force per unit area that develops is called hydraulic stress.
