The economic problem is the problem of choice in allocating scarce resources among unlimited wants; it arises from unlimited wants, scarce resources and their alternative uses.

Meaning of the economic problem: An economic problem is essentially a problem of choice. It is the problem of how to use the limited resources (which have alternative uses) in the best possible way to satisfy the unlimited human wants. Because everything cannot be had, every individual, firm and economy must choose.

Why the economic problem arises — three causes:

  1. Unlimited human wants — human wants are endless; as soon as one want is satisfied, another arises, and some wants recur. So all wants can never be fully satisfied.
  2. Scarcity of resources (means) — the resources (land, labour, capital) available to satisfy these wants are limited/scarce relative to the wants.
  3. Alternative uses of resources — the scarce resources can be put to more than one use (e.g. land can grow wheat or rice), so one has to decide which use to put them to. …
