Correct a BOP deficit by monetary measures (deflation, devaluation, exchange control), trade measures (promote exports, restrict imports) and attracting foreign capital.

When a country has an unfavourable (deficit) balance of payments — payments exceeding receipts — the following measures are used to correct the disequilibrium:

1. Monetary measures:

  • Deflation — reducing the money supply and incomes lowers domestic prices, which makes exports cheaper (raising them) and imports relatively dearer (reducing them).
  • Devaluation / depreciation — reducing the external value of the home currency makes exports cheaper and imports costlier, improving the trade balance.
  • Exchange control — the central bank regulates and rations the use of foreign exchange, directing it to essential imports only.

2. Trade measures:

  • Export promotion — through subsidies, incentives, better quality and trade agreements, to increase export earnings.
  • Import control — through tariffs (import duties) and quotas and import substitution, to reduce the import bill.

3. Measures to attract foreign exchange inflows:
