An IC is convex to the origin due to the diminishing marginal rate of substitution.

An indifference curve is convex to the origin because of the law of diminishing marginal rate of substitution (MRS).

The MRS is the amount of one good (say Y) that a consumer is willing to give up to get one more unit of another good (X), remaining on the same indifference curve. As the consumer acquires more of good X and less of good Y, the marginal utility of X falls and that of Y rises, so he is willing to sacrifice less and less of Y for each additional unit of X. This falling MRS makes the curve flatter as we move rightward, giving it a shape that is convex to the origin.
