Biodiversity is the total variety of life at genetic, species, and ecosystem levels, and it is conserved either by protecting habitats in place (in-situ) or preserving species/germplasm outside their natural habitat (ex-situ).

(i) What is biodiversity? Biodiversity, a term popularised by E.O. Wilson, refers to the enormous variety and variability of living organisms found on Earth (or within a defined region), spanning three levels:

  • Genetic diversity — variation in genes within a species (e.g., varieties of rice or medicinal plant Rauwolfia vomitoria showing different alkaloid concentrations across the Himalayan range).
  • Species diversity — the variety/number of species within a region.
  • Ecological/ecosystem diversity — the variety of habitats, ecological processes, and ecosystem types (deserts, rainforests, wetlands, coral reefs, etc.) within a region.

(ii) Ways to conserve biodiversity:

  • In-situ conservation — protecting species within their own natural habitat, allowing them to continue their natural life processes and interactions, e.g.:
    • National parks and wildlife sanctuaries — protected areas prohibiting hunting/habitat destruction.
    • Biosphere reserves — larger protected areas that also allow limited, regulated human activity.
    • Sacred groves and hotspot protection — community/legally protected biodiversity-rich zones.
  • Ex-situ conservation — protecting threatened species by removing them from their natural habitat and placing them under human care/controlled conditions, e.g.:
    • Zoological parks and botanical gardens — housing and breeding endangered animal/plant species. …
