Narcotic (opioid) drugs are CNS depressants that relieve pain and induce sleep; two examples are morphine and heroin, both of which are highly addictive with serious physical and psychological ill effects.

Narcotic drugs act on the central nervous system, slowing its activity, relieving severe pain, and inducing drowsiness or sleep. Most narcotics used/abused are derived from the opium poppy plant (Papaver somniferum).

Morphine: a powerful analgesic, medically used to relieve severe pain (e.g. post-surgical, terminal illness pain). As a drug of abuse, its ill effects include strong physical and psychological dependence/addiction, drowsiness, nausea, constipation, slowed breathing (respiratory depression), and, at high doses, life-threatening respiratory failure.
