Colostrum, the thick yellowish milk secreted in the first few days after childbirth, is rich in IgA antibodies that protect the newborn.

Of the five antibody (immunoglobulin) classes — IgA, IgD, IgE, IgG and IgM — IgA is secreted at mucosal surfaces and in body secretions such as saliva, tears, and breast milk. Colostrum in particular is especially rich in IgA, giving the newborn infant a dose of passive, ready-made immunity against infections during the vulnerable early days before its own immune system matures.
