Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin, the first antibiotic, in 1928, after noticing that a mould contaminating one of his bacterial culture plates had killed the surrounding bacteria.

While working with Staphylococcus cultures, Fleming observed that a plate accidentally contaminated with the mould Penicillium notatum showed a clear zone around the mould where the bacteria had failed to grow.
