Transcription is the copying of genetic information from a DNA template strand into a complementary RNA molecule, catalysed by RNA polymerase.

Transcription is the first step of gene expression. The enzyme RNA polymerase binds to a promoter sequence on DNA, unwinds the double helix locally, and synthesises a single-stranded RNA molecule (mRNA, tRNA, or rRNA) that is complementary to the DNA template strand, using ribonucleotides and following base-pairing rules (with uracil pairing where DNA has adenine).
