In co-dominance, both alleles at a gene locus are expressed independently and fully in a heterozygous individual, so neither allele is dominant over the other; both traits appear together in the phenotype. Example: the human AB blood group.

In simple Mendelian dominance, a heterozygote (e.g. Tt) shows only the dominant phenotype, with the recessive allele's effect completely masked. In co-dominance, by contrast, neither allele is recessive to the other — BOTH alleles produce their own distinct, detectable product, and the heterozygote's phenotype displays both traits simultaneously, side by side (rather than blending into an intermediate form, which would instead be incomplete dominance).
