Mendel's law of dominance says one allele (dominant) fully expresses itself over the other (recessive) in a heterozygote, illustrated by the uniform tall F1 in a tall x dwarf pea cross.

Law of Dominance: When an organism is heterozygous for a trait (carries two different alleles), only one of the two alleles — the dominant allele — expresses itself in the phenotype, while the other, recessive, allele remains masked/hidden, though it is still present in the genotype and can reappear in later generations.

Illustration with a monohybrid cross: Mendel crossed a pure-breeding tall pea plant (genotype TT) with a pure-breeding dwarf pea plant (genotype tt).

  • Parental cross: TT (tall) × tt (dwarf)
  • Gametes: T and t
  • F1 generation: All offspring are Tt (heterozygous), and every single F1 plant is tall in phenotype, even though it carries one 't' (dwarf) allele. …
