Flowering plants have evolved several devices to discourage self-pollination and promote cross-pollination (outbreeding), including timing differences, spatial separation, and genetic self-recognition.

Because continued self-pollination reduces genetic variability and vigour, many bisexual flowers have evolved contrivances to prevent it:

  1. Dichogamy: pollen release and stigma receptivity are not synchronised in the same flower - either the anthers mature and shed pollen before the stigma of that flower becomes receptive (protandry) or vice versa (protogyny) - so self-pollen and a receptive stigma are rarely available at the same time.
  2. Herkogamy: the anther and stigma are placed at different positions within the flower, or separated by a physical/structural barrier, so that pollen from the same flower cannot easily reach its own stigma. …
