Oligosaccharides are carbohydrates that yield a small number (2 to about 10) of monosaccharide units on hydrolysis; sucrose, which hydrolyses into one glucose and one fructose unit, is the most common example.

Oligosaccharides are one of the three broad classes of carbohydrates (the others being monosaccharides and polysaccharides).
