Both properties trace back to the partially filled d orbitals of transition metals: unpaired d electrons create a net magnetic moment, and those same electrons also strengthen the metallic bonding, raising the atomisation enthalpy.

(a) Magnetic behaviour: Transition metal ions frequently have one or more unpaired electrons in their (n-1)d subshell (since d orbitals are filled singly first, by Hund's rule, before pairing). Each unpaired electron acts as a tiny magnet (due to its spin), so an ion/compound with unpaired d electrons has a net magnetic moment and shows paramagnetism (attracted into a magnetic field); the more unpaired electrons, the stronger the paramagnetism. (Some transition metals, like iron, are even ferromagnetic.)
