Ultraviolet rays are put to use for their germicidal and fluorescence-inducing effects, while microwaves' short wavelength and ability to penetrate/heat matter make them central to radar and cooking applications.

Uses of ultraviolet (UV) rays:

  1. Sterilisation: UV rays have enough energy to kill bacteria and germs, so they are used to sterilise drinking water, surgical instruments, and food packaging.
  2. Detecting forgery: UV lamps are used in forensic science to reveal forged documents, fingerprints, and to check the authenticity of currency notes (via fluorescent security features that glow under UV light).

(UV is also used medically for treating certain skin diseases like vitiligo, and in tanning.)

Uses of microwaves:

  1. Radar systems: Because of their short wavelength, microwaves can be transmitted as narrow beams and reflected off objects; this is used in radar to detect the location and speed of aircraft, ships, and in speed-detecting guns used by traffic police. …
