Magnetic field lines are a visual/geometric tool for representing a magnetic field's direction and relative strength in space, and they obey specific rules that follow from the underlying physics.

Definition: A magnetic field line is an imaginary curve drawn in a magnetic field such that the tangent to the curve at any point gives the direction of the magnetic field (B) at that point. Where field lines are closer together, the field is stronger; where they are more spread out, it is weaker.

Two properties of magnetic field lines:

  1. They form continuous closed loops. Unlike electric field lines, which start on positive charges and end on negative charges, magnetic field lines outside a magnet go from the north pole to the south pole, and INSIDE the magnet they continue from the south pole back to the north pole, forming a closed loop.
